皮特·西格（Pete Seeger）。1919年生于纽约市，父亲是王洛宾式的采集南方民歌的学者。伍迪·格斯里（Woody Guthrie）、铅肚皮（Leadbelly）这些著名的美国农民歌手们就是被这些学者们在乡间发现的。岁月飞梭，很多人都已经安眠在属于他们的历史中。只有皮特，他经历了大萧条、二战、极右恐怖、民权运动、反战游行、花童时代、经济复苏，一直活到了今天的信息时代。

皮特从小就被班卓琴的声音深深吸引，经过一段南部的游历后，这位来自北方大城市中产阶级家庭的小青年变成了比格斯里还土的“南方人”。除了与生俱来的美国自由精神外，在大萧条和战争中渡过青少年的皮特还受到以解放人类为终极目标的国际共运的深深影响。法西斯时代，他在琴上写下“这件乐器会包围仇恨并让它投降This Machine Surrounds Hate and Forces It to Surrender.”。麦卡锡时期，他顶着压力创建了名字充满无产阶级色彩的“织布工”乐队，唱“我怎能停止歌唱How can I keep from singing”。人民的自由受到深深的威胁时，他写下了“假如我有一把铁锤If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)”。在争取民权的全美大游行中，他带头传唱古老的歌曲“我们终将胜利We Shall Overcome”。他的“花落何方Where Have All the Flowers Gone?”成为反战运动的圣歌。嬉皮士们将吉他插上电，成为一代的主角后，他开始静静的继续给孩子们唱古老的歌曲“麦克，把船划到彼岸吧Michael Row the Boat Ashore”，直到今天。

历史最终是由人民书写，这是颠扑不破的真理。皮特的一生，见证了这个真理生效的全过程。同样，自由和音乐也终将属于热爱他们的人民。
